The Family Doctor

The family doctor (primary care doctor, general practitioner) is the person who knows all the details about the patient his/her life expectancy, personal, family, and social situations, health problems of the different systems and his/her global history and therefore he is qualified to decide, together with the patient, the treatment that should be followed and the objectives that need to be reached.

Ensuring the quality of health care entails that the doctor and the patient get to know and respect each other and help in the best possible way, in order for the patient to have the best care and the doctor to develop his vocation and his function in an optimal level.

The specialist doctors should act as consultants. That is, their care should be normally episodic and they should hand over the follow up of the patient to the family doctor (primary care doctor, general practitioner).
